Uganda

Uganda (officially Republic of Uganda), is a land locked country in East Africa. The official language is English, but around forty languages are regularly used. 84% of the population are Christian.

With a population of around 35 million, Uganda is one of the poorest nations in the world with over a third of the population living on less than $1.25 a day.

The south of the country borders one of the world's largest lakes, Lake Victoria, and most of the major cities, including the capital Kampala, are located in the south.

The currency used is the Ugandan Shilling, and its main exports are coffee, tea and fish. Agriculture makes up a large proportion of industry and 90% of women in the rural areas work in farming as well as looking after the family, cooking, fetching water and firewood and caring for the elderly and orphans. Men average around 9 hours of work a day, whereas women may work around 6 hours, but in addition to 9 hours of domestic work.

Life expectancy in Uganda is only 53 years, not helped by a significant number of the population being infected with HIV. Literacy levels are only 67%.
